Scott Altman is senior vice president of civil operations for the ASRC Federal Engineering, Aerospace and Mission Systems (EAMS) operating group. Altman is responsible for the group’s financial and technical performance, providing leadership in setting and executing operating plans and delivering on commitments to NASA, NOAA and FAA customers.
Prior to joining the ASRC Federal family of companies in 2010, Altman had a distinguished career with NASA and the Navy. The former astronaut is a veteran of four space flights who logged over 51 days in space. He was pilot on STS-90 and STS-106, and commanded two Hubble Space Telescope servicing missions that involved dangerous spacewalks and delicate repairs to keep the telescope operating for years to come.
Altman served as chief of the Exploration Branch of the Astronaut Office. He spent two years as shuttle branch chief for the Astronaut Office and lead for the Cockpit Avionics Upgrade, and served NASA Headquarters as deputy director, Requirements Division of the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate.
Altman, who performed aerial stunts while doubling as Tom Cruise’s pilot character in the 1985 movie “Top Gun” before becoming an astronaut, has logged more than 7,000 hours in over 40 types of aircraft. He was awarded the Navy Air Medal for his role as a strike leader flying over Southern Iraq in support of Operation Southern Watch.
Altman received his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the University of Illinois, and was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in August 1981. He holds a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
