- 34th woman to travel in space
- Logged more than 711 hours in space
- Flew twice as a NASA Astronaut, STS-90 and STS-130 missions
- STS-90, Flight Engineer, science experiment operator and test subject for the Neurolab mission
-Performed life sciences experiments inside the Spacelab aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia
-Last flight of the Spacelab, Neurolab performed 26 complicated science experiments to study the effects of space on the brain and central nervous system (7 crew & 2000 animals, insects, and fish)
-Many of the experiments now continue onboard the International Space Station (ISS)
- STS-130, robotic arm operator and cargo load master for Space Station Assembly flight
- Used Space Shuttle and Space Station robotic arms to install Node 3 (Habitation Module) and the 7-windowed Cupola onto the (ISS)
- Led the transfer of 4500 pounds of cargo, and helped install water recycling, air cleaning and cooling, and crew exercise equipment in Node 3 and Cupola on ISS
- Interleaved her U. S. Navy and NASA careers for 30 years
- Worked as a Space Shuttle Engineer at KSC for 6 years, prior to selection as an astronaut
- Graduated from U. S. Naval Academy with the second year to include women (40 years ago)
- Flew aboard Navy P-3 aircraft on research missions worldwide
- When the combat exclusion laws were changed in 1993, Hire became the first woman in the U. S. military to be assigned to a combat position, flying combat-missioned maritime patrol P-3 aircraft
- President of Astra Portolan Corporation, that she founded to guide organizations and individuals towards emerging new space related opportunities
