Joseph Smith is currently the Director of the Mechanical and Aerospace Division at SC Solutions headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA. Mr. Smith has over 20 years of experience in spacecraft, space vehicles, and experimental aerodynamics in top category motorsport. Mr. Smith’s areas of expertise include - design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of space hardware, that includes components, systems, optical benches, and crewed launch vehicles.
At SC Solutions, Mr. Smith oversees a talented group of cross disciplinary engineers who service a wide variety of clients from the space industry. These include - new space start-ups, traditional aerospace primes, and innovative entrepreneurs. Identifying, recruiting, and retaining talent for the engineering team, in a fiercely competitive Silicon Valley, is one of Mr. Smith’s core responsibilities. Here, he has developed his own philosophy and outlook of workforce development that is necessary to help small energetic companies like SC Solutions.
Mr. Smith is a co-organizer for the Space Exploration and Habitat Technology Group of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He recently moderated a panel for “Space Habitat Systems Requirements” at the 2022 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) – ASME’s largest conference - in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Smith was also selected to be the Co-Chair of the Aerospace Testing Seminar (ATS), organized by the Aerospace Corporation, to be held in March 2023 that is attended by testing professionals from the space industry across the globe.
Mr. Smith holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the California State Polytechnic University-Pomona.
