Mr. Daniel Murray has over 25 years of experience in the space industry, including the past 20 years with the FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation where he serves as the Director of the Office of Operational Safety. In this role, he serves as a senior advisor to the Associate and Deputy Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation. Mr. Murray provides executive leadership and direction for the Operational Safety organization consisting of the Safety Authorization, Safety Analysis, and Safety Assurance Divisions. He oversees agency efforts to ensure public health and safety through the licensing of commercial space launches and reentries and launch and reentry site operations, including the evaluations of applications, the conducting of specialized analyses, and compliance monitoring. Mr. Murray also formulates and executes strategies to ensure continual improvement of operational services that align with Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and AST strategic goals and objectives.
Mr. Murray has held various leadership roles within the FAA and AST, including Manager of the Safety Authorization Division, co-lead of the FAA’s Joint Space Operations Group, the AST Principle Engineer for Space and Air Traffic Management, and the AST Program Lead for Tools and Analysis.
Prior to joining the FAA, Mr. Murray was a flight controller and software engineer supporting the Space Shuttle program at United Space Alliance and the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Houston.
